Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown says that, while Romelu Lukaku’s exit from the club “wasn’t ideal”, but has backed the decision to sell him to Inter Milan in an exclusive interview with Football FanCast.
What’s he said?
Lukaku left United at the start of the season to join the Italian giants in a deal that cost Inter £73m.
Since then, he has played 34 times for the club, scoring 23 times.
In his absence, United have relied on the talents of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and Mason Greenwood, with the three scoring 19, 15, and 11 goals respectively.

And Brown doesn’t believe that Lukaku would currently get into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s starting XI.
He said: “People will say we got left short a bit which is fair enough.
“But the way we started this season with Rashford up front, I don’t think Romelu Lukaku would be playing. He’s a very good player by the way, and he wants to be playing, so if someone wants to leave, there’s nothing much you can do.
“If I’m being honest, you have to start somewhere, and it probably wasn’t ideal.
“But at the same time, if a player doesn’t want to be here or want to play, and a team comes in, you have to let them go.”
Fair statement
Brown has made a good point.
There isn’t a lot of point in trying to retain an unhappy player and they received a hefty transfer fee for his services too.
Indeed, last season, Lukaku made 22 Premier League starts but was often benched and was left out of the squad altogether for the final two games of the season.
In total, he scored 42 goals in 96 games for the club – not a shabby return by any means – but managed to hit the net just 12 times in the league in 2018/19.
He has moved onto pastures new and appears to be enjoying life in Italy, while United have three young forwards scoring goals at Old Trafford.
All in all, it hasn’t worked out too badly for the Red Devils.
Meanwhile, Man United fans have poked fun at one man!
