According to Sky Sports, Everton’s Morgan Schneiderlin could be surplus to requirements if the club signs the midfielder they want to get during the January transfer window.
What’s the word, then?
Well, Sky Sports report that the Merseyside outfit are looking for a player in the mold of Watford’s Abdoulaye Doucoure, who they have been linked with in the past – especially when former Hornets boss Marco Silva was in charge.
Sky Sports say that it is not known whether they still carry an interest in the Frenchman following the Portuguese’s sacking, but they say a new arrival in the New Year could have an impact on Schneiderlin’s future.
The 30-year-old’s current contract at Goodison Park is due to expire in the summer of 2021, with the report saying he is needed unless the club bring in the midfielder they want to.
Interesting situation
By the sounds of it, the £24m man’s future is literally dependent on whether director of football Marcel Brands can deliver in the transfer market or not.
Of course, if Everton had all of their central midfield options available to them then manager Carlo Ancelotti would be able to pick from Andre Gomes, Jean-Philippe Gbamin, Fabian Delph, Tom Davies, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Schneiderlin.
However, the former two are currently missing because of injury, while Delph and the former Southampton and Manchester United man himself have also suffered with issues – including the calf one he is currently sidelined with.
Given Schneiderlin is 30 years of age, only has 18 months remaining on his deal and has been criticised by the fans over and over for his performances, it would be no surprise if he was the one to be sacrificed for a new addition.

Despite all of that, he has still made nine Premier League starts this term – albeit only probably due to the injuries suffered by Gomes and Gbamin – but that is a sign he can still do a job for the Italian this season if needed.
It will be interesting to see what transpires in January, and whether the Frenchman is still a Toffees player by February 1.
