Newcastle United confirmed on Tuesday that midfielder Jonjo Shelvey suffered a knee injury during the 2-2 draw against Bournemouth on Saturday and could be a doubt for the trip to Anfield to face Liverpool this weekend, and Magpies fans have called on Mikel Merino to step up if the 26-year-old is indeed absent.
Shelvey has been one of the Tyneside outfit’s best and most consistent performers in recent weeks following a disappointing spell of form that saw him briefly relegated to the substitutes’ bench, but he was visibly struggling towards the end of the match against the Cherries and now could miss the visit to Merseyside.
Meanwhile, Merino has found himself on the bench in recent weeks after struggling to rediscover the form he was showing prior to the back injury he suffered in October, but he may be handed a chance to impress by Rafa Benitez against Jurgen Klopp’s men.
Newcastle supporters were quick to have their say on the 21-year-old via social media, and while one said “Merino needs to step up again”, another said “hopefully Merino can rediscover early season form”.
