As reported by The Express, Brendan Rodgers is wasting no time in laying down next season’s challenge for his unbeaten treble winning squad.
What’s the story?
Fresh from winning the Scottish Cup and becoming just third manager in Celtic’s long history to win a domestic treble of trophies, Brendan Rodgers is a happy man.
He isn’t thinking short-term though and is already looking ahead to next season and the challenges the Hoops will face, specifically in Europe.
The Irishman has laid down a big challenge for his team to live up to as they look to improve on their bottom of the group showing in last season’s UEFA Champions League.
As quoted by The Express, Rodgers said of Europe:
You have to be careful and recognise where we are. We’re 10 times behind budget-wise. You have to be realistic. The gauge for us is to measure calmly once we’ve qualified. We would like to be in Europe for the second part of the season, whatever competition that’s in, and that’s a huge, huge ask for a club like ourselves.
It is of course a tough ask for the Hoops to compete with the continent’s biggest clubs but we’ve seen down the years that even against teams with dramatically bigger budgets, they can compete on the night.
Finishing third in the group stages would be a significant step forward and allow them to test themselves in the UEFA Europa League, that has seen clubs like Ajax get as far as the final recently.
Can Rodgers emulate the likes of Martin O’Neill and guide the club to huge European success?
