Bournemouth confirmed on Thursday that star striker Callum Wilson has been ruled out of the rest of the season with a cruciate ligament injury, sustained in training on Wednesday.
The injury has been suffered to his left knee, mirroring the injury he sustained in his right knee last season and he’s likely to be out of action for six months. It’s a massive blow for the player who had worked so hard to get back to full fitness following the horror injury last year.
However, Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe is backing him to make a full recovery and come back to fight for his place in the team.
Speaking to the official Cherries website, he said:
What’s important now is that he receives the support and love of his family and friends, teammates and everyone associated with AFC Bournemouth. Callum showed incredible character and determination to come back from a similar set-back last season and we know he has the same strength and will to do the same again.
It leaves the manager with a massive dilemma heading into the final months of the season with the south coast underdogs still not entirely clear of relegation trouble.
This stat from Opta shows just how big a miss the 24 year old will be.
Six of those league goals have come this season, more than anyone else at the club and Cherries fans will now be hoping that the likes of Benik Afobe, Junior Stanislas and Ryan Fraser can step up in his place to provide the goals.
